Let’s build a bonfire!

November 4, 2016 · by Andy Tiller

bonfire_asiainfo_gartner-magic-quadrant_940x350It’s that time of year again. Hallowe’en, spooky goings-on and strange events.  Here in the UK we build bonfires and celebrate, on November 5, the efforts of a man who tried to blow up our Parliament and wipe out the Government of the day.   In fairness, historians would point out that what we celebrate is the failure of Guy Fawkes and his half-baked scheme.

So this year, I thought that I would really get into the spirit of things and also celebrate failure.  I’m building my own personal bonfire, and rather than place an effigy of a Guy Fawkes at the top, I’m putting a copy of Gartner’s latest, half-baked IRCM Magic Quadrant. Read More →

Embed the operator – not just the SIM

September 21, 2016 · by Andy Tiller

Seize the moment

The advent of the embedded SIM, or e-SIM, is seen by many operators as a threat to their business models.

SIMs that can be soft-switched between networks would appear to make it easier for customers – and in particular millions of devices on the IoT – to be moved between networks.

A wiser approach to raising revenue

March 29, 2016 · by Andy Tiller

Currency symbols with country flags

We noted an unusual news story this month, which raises the spectre of telecoms consumers being targeted as a source of government revenue. According to this report, the Nigerian government is looking at imposing a communication service tax on consumers of voice, data, SMS, MMS and payTV services, to compensate for falling oil revenues. Clear minds look to the Cloud

March 1, 2016 · by Andy Tiller

178991640In Barcelona for MWC last week the outlook was all clear skies with a temperature that was very acceptable for the time of year. But it seemed as if the telco service providers at the event were more interested than ever before in looking to the Cloud, and for companies like us, that means the temperature is rising as the market heats up. Upwardly mobile

February 18, 2016 · by Andy Tiller

Screen Shot 2016-02-18 at 10.30.27If you work in the mobile industry, you know it is that time of year again – the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, which opens on Monday 22 February. Last year the event saw more than 93,000 visitors from 200 countries – numbers that ‘shattered previous records,’ according to the post-Congress announcement from the GSMA.

So It’s Not Just Me Then…

January 5, 2016 · by Andy Tiller

Bias Concept Clipped Cards and Lights A little while ago, I met with Light Reading’s Ray Le Maistre and went on the record with my feelings about Gartner’s latest Magic Quadrant for Integrated Revenue and Customer Management (IRCM) for CSPs. When I read Ray’s resulting article, I could see it was an accurate reflection of our discussion, but I was a bit concerned that others would regard it simply as the sour grapes rant of a bitter man. (See Magic Quadrant or Gartner ‘Graft’? ) Read More →

Whether its usage or using – data dominates the agenda

October 27, 2015 · by Andy Tiller

DataIt’s been a busy month for telecoms industry conferences for us. We were sponsors at both the Global Telecoms Business Marketing Summit and at the Next Generation BSS conference in London.

Although very different events in their make-up, one thing that struck us about both events was the focus they had on data – both how much of it consumers use these days, and how much of it the operators collect about those consumers. Read More →

Ad-blocking by Apple might spoil the barrel

September 29, 2015 · by Andy Tiller

Customer data – gathering it, analyzing it and monetizing it, is the mobile internet’s hot topic of the moment. And operators need to pay close attention. Last month it was Spotify in the news for its revamped T&Cs that contained unwanted intrusion into its users’ personal lives. This month, it’s Apple’s new iOS 9 that is gathering attention. Spotify proves the “what’s in it for me?” rule for operators

September 16, 2015 · by Andy Tiller

Spotify has caused quite a stir with its revised terms and conditions for subscribers.  For every 90 or so consumers who simply tick the “accept” box without reading the small print, there are at least ten who get out their fine toothcomb. Read More →
